Purpose of periodic test and inspection? The purpose of periodic inspection and test is to provide an engineering view on whether or not the installation is in a satisfactory condition where it can continue to be used safely. A detailed examination of the installation is required along with the appropriate tests in accordance with IET Wiring Regulations BS7671:2008(2015) 18th Edition. Periodic inspection and testing is carried out for what purpose? 1.The safety and purpose against the effects of electric shock and burns 2.The protection against damage to property by fire and heat arising from an installation defect 3.To confirm that the installation is not damaged or deteriorated so far as to impair safety 4.The identification of installation defects and departures from the requirements of the regulations that may give rise to danger How often do I need to get my property tested? If you own your own domestic property then you should get your property tested at a maximum of 10 years or when you first move into a property. If you rent out a domestic property (house or flat) then you should get the property tested at a maximum of every 5 years or every change of tenancy. If you own a commercial property then the maximum test period should be 5 years or change or occupancy. If the property is an industrial then it should be tested at a maximum of every 3 years.
Other types of installations are listed below: Construction sites need testing every 3 months. Hospitals, Cinemas, Caravan parks, Marinas, Swimming pools, Fire alarms, Petrol stations and Laundrettes should all be tested every year.
Agricultural and Horticultural, Caravans, Emergency lighting should be tested every 3 years.
Offices, Shops, Laboratories, church installations and village halls and community centres is every 5 years.
Highway power supplies should be tested every 6-8 years. Quick over view of what happens during a periodic inspection and test. During an electrical inspection and test every circuit will need to be tested in your property this means that every sockets and light and switch will need to be accessed in order to complete the test. On average the test can take anything between 1 and 3 hours on a domestic property to complete the test. Anything that does not meet the requirements of the current regulations will be noted on the reports on once you have been informed will need to be brought up to the current regulations and recommendations. The power will need to be turned off to complete the test this can be turned off for a long period of time due to the work that need to be carried out during the test, this is know as a "dead test". Sometimes the test will find faults an other parts of the installation that is not up to current regulations these can sometimes be major faults witch is of high danger that will be rectified immediately and you will be notified of the problem once rectified and others that may not be of immediate danger therefore you will be notified before rectifying the problem.
